3 Important Tips for Moving with a Pet

If you’re feeling stressed about an upcoming move, your first reaction might be to grab ahold of your therapy dog and hug them until its over. But your pup may need you more than you need him. You have probably seen the way your dog reacts when you grab your suitcase for a vacation or work trip – they can often get anxiety over a short trip. Now imagine the feeling when you begin to box up your entire home! You and your pet may be nervous about the next step, but there are steps you can take to make moving easier for both of you!

Pack pet items last

Your pet is not going to like that you're packing up the house. He or she may seem a tad nervous that their home is becoming disheveled and undergoing so much change. Even though your belongings are headed into the boxes, you can reduce stress on your pets by packing their items last. Veterinarians suggest that toys, beds, crates, eating bowls and more should all be left in place until the last possible moment!

Stick to the routine

My dog knows the routine - every morning and every evening it's time for a walk around the neighborhood.  Your cat, dog, or other fury companion has also probably grown accustomed to a routine for exercise, meals, play time, rides in the car, and more. As you lead up to the move, try not to disrupt the routine; and when you land in your new home, continue with your routine just as you did before. Your pet will be eager to check out the new landscape, but sticking to a to what they know will help them adapt even quicker!

Travel with care

Who better to offer pet advice than the dog whisperer himself, Cesar Milan: “It’s natural to feel bad about crating your dog. After all, you wouldn’t want to be crated. But don’t project your feelings onto your dog. They don’t mind the crate and some even feel safer in one.” Says Milan. In fact, Cesar even offers a video lesson on how to crate your dog for travel.
